Control room design

An investment for your company’s efficiency

A control room is an essential tool for any company or public service that requires real-time monitoring of its operations. That’s why it’s essential to have an ergonomic, functional work environment that is adapted to the needs of each company.

We design unique, modular and ergonomic control rooms for critical processes 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for any industry, utility or private company.

Our team of control room design experts is available to assist you in the realisation of your project. We are able to offer tailor-made solutions to meet all your company’s requirements.

Control room design: elements to take into account

  • Size of the room: Ideally, the size of the room should be determined at the design stage and not afterwards.
  • Security: the control room should be equipped with effective security systems to protect sensitive data and prevent intrusion.
  • Ergonomics: Workstations should be ergonomically designed to minimise operator fatigue and musculoskeletal disorders.
  • Connectivity: fast and reliable network connectivity is essential for real-time data transmission.
  • Lighting: it is important to have adequate lighting to avoid eye strain and ensure accurate monitoring.
  • Air conditioning: The control room should be equipped with an efficient air conditioning system to maintain a comfortable temperature and regulate humidity.
  • Acoustics: Soundproofing of the control room is important to minimise distractions and allow clear communication between operators.
  • Interoperability: the room must cooperate with other control or decision spaces. Sometimes, some operators are located on remote sites or even in home offices.

FOCUS: The importance of ergonomics in the control room. The ISO 11064 standard.

Professionals working in a control room all know how important it is to maintain constant attention to the systems they monitor. This is why ergonomics should not be neglected.

Ergonomics is a multi-faceted issue, as it can have an impact on the health and well-being of operators, as well as on the productivity and quality of operations.

To improve the ergonomics of a control room, it is important to take into account several aspects, such as:

  • Furniture should be adjustable to suit the body shape of each operator.
  • Screens should be placed at an optimal height and distance from the eyes to avoid excessive eye strain.
  • Seats should be comfortable and properly support the spine.
  • The HMI (Human Machine Interface) should be carefully designed. For example, the layout of the displayed content or the mouse keyboards (KVM tools) must be easily accessible. Their functionality must be intuitive to avoid confusion or misuse.

A good starting point in designing an ergonomic control room is to follow the guidelines of ISO 11064. It sets out design principles for the ergonomics of workspaces, including the layout of screens, the height of workstations, the quality of seating, the accessibility of equipment and the human-machine interfaces.
